Summer Post: What Makes a Summer Read?

It's time for another summer post! The first month of summer has just flown by, so I wanted to squeeze one more post of this series in before we get into August. Today we're going to be talking about summer reads or as some like to call it, beach reads.

Have you heard bookish people say these phrases before

"Oh this'll good for summer."
"This is perfect for the beach."
"I was saving this book for my vacation."

And found yourself thinking...

"Hold the phone. What makes certain books more appropriate for summer as opposed to winter or fall?"

Well, I think I've figured out. A book that possess at least one of these qualities makes a book a summer read (in my most humble opinion, of course).

Jane's Reviews: Defy by Sarah B. Larson

It's time for another edition of Jane's Reviews! This is the series where I invite my sister onto A Splash of Ink to review some YA books. She's been here before and reviewed The Falconer by Elizabeth May. Let's leave her lots of nice comments and give her a warm welcome. *insert virtual clapping here*

Today's book is Defy by Sarah B. Larson. Here's what you need to know about it:

How to Battle the Blogging Slumps (AKA Sunny Talks About Stats)

There comes a time in every blogger's life when they go through the blogging slumps. I've been through it a few times over my three years of blogging. Most recently, it hit me a few months ago.

I've always loved looking at my blog stats. I won't deny it. I love seeing the GFC followers grow and I love seeing my page views spike. I love what I blog about, but I won't lie and say that I could be one of those bloggers who writes just for the fun of it and doesn't give two hoots about who's reading (or in my case not reading). Call me shallow, but for me half the fun of blogging is knowing that people are reading, and seeing the interactions between reader and writer.

So you can imagine how I felt when my stats looked like this:

I was used to an upwards trend in my view-counts. Of course there were a few dips, but in general the graph kept moving up. Suddenly, after such a high point the view counts plummet. The next month is a bit better, but the following months are showing a downward trend. It might not look terrible to an outsider, but to me (granted I can be a tad bit dramatic) I was not happy.

Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater was my vacation read. I brought it with me when I went away and worked at a camp a few weeks ago. I spent many nights curled up in our tent, tucked in my sleeping bag and clutching my book light to read this book. The book might have gotten slightly damp, but I think I saved it...shhhh don't tell the library! I just had to know what was going to happen to Blue (seriously, that name!) and the Raven Boys!

I've been doing more reviews lately and since I had some stuff to say about this book, I thought it would be the perfect candidate. Before I get into what I thought of the book, let me give you some basic information: book cover and synopsis (via Goodreads).

Books and Expectations (a ranty-type post)

I want to crawl under a rock and not hear anybody else's opinions on books (especially books that I want to read) for a very long time.

Sunny, don't you think that's a little drastic?

Nope, not one bit. Being a book hermit is perfectly normal and socially acceptable right?

Ahem. Not really, especially since you are a book blogger. What brought this crazy-speak on anyways?

I'm so glad you asked, inner brain voice, so glad you asked...

I'm On Vacation!

Hello everybody! I hope everyone's week is going well. If you read my last post, you'll know that I'm on vacation from the blog-o-sphere this week. I am currently helping with the running of a camp and doing some actual camping with no internet access *GASP*. I went away on this trip last year and had a lovely time. As you're looking at your computer screen, I'm probably looking at our campsite:

Since I'm on vacation, I wanted to give you plenty of other reading. I think it's so nice to promote other blogs that you enjoy reading, so I wanted to take the opportunity to do that today. I'm also going to link to some of my posts in the archives.

Summer Post: Reading List

Summer is here! And it means two things 1) I'm going on to be away next week to run a camp which means that there will only be one post next week (try not to cry too much) and 2) a new series on A Splash of Ink! I think it's pretty self explanatory; this is going to be a series where the posts all have a summer theme. I don't know how often these types of posts will go up (I'll still be posting twice a week, regardless), but it will run until September. Today, I'm sharing what's on my summer to-read list.
